Terra Nova Guard Build
To finally say goodbye to the time of dinosaurs, I present a very basic futuristic soldier costume based on the short-lived Terra Nova television series. Because I need every excuse to use one of my most random thrift store finds of all time, the motocross jacket.
The soldiers in Terra Nova seem to have a mishmash of military uniform types depending on function and rank. A unifying theme seems to be the black motocross-type armor, and then variants on camouflage or black. I modeled this look based on Lt. Washington, who as the second-in-command alternates between a more informal "civvies" look but also will don armor for operations.

1. Armor
In the series, Terra Nova soldiers wear a variation of what looks suspiciously like motocross armor. I lucked into this at a thrift store for about $20, and have removed the Fox racing logos.
2. Shirt
A basic black tank top, already in my closet.
3. Pants
Well I don't have military trousers lying around, but I do have Columbia hiking pants in black and green that will do in a pinch. Ideally they should be looser, but they're flexible, tough, breathable, and water-resistant, so they seem like they'd fit with the aesthetic. They were already a part of my wardrobe, but can be found affordably at a Columbia outlet store. If you want to get closer to the military look, army surplus stores are likely a better option.
4. Boots
I've been on the look out for some basic work boots, and these are a pretty affordable set that also have the look of modern combat boots. I picked up these at Walmart for $30, brand Interceptor and model Force. The only trick is they're in men's sizes, so finding a small enough pair can be difficult if they don't have them in stock.
5. Fingerless gloves
These are a pair of exercise gloves, very cheap and easy to modify. Sadly I could not find them for the photo shoot, but they would have been a nice touch.
6. Dog tags
These futuristic dog tags are budget replicas I carved and painted, as you can see in this tutorial.
7. Prop pistol
For a basic sidearm I reused this futuristic-looking pistol that I originally painted for a Red Hood build. It's not an exact replica of the sidearms in Terra Nova but it looks like it can fit with the level of technology.
8. Prop rifle
This is a nerf-type rifle I painted awhile back, it's not of the same mold as the Terra Nova rifles but looks like it could fit in with their arsenal.
9. Belt and holster
I adapted this from the holsters I made for the Red Hood costume, and a 2inch wide basic black nylon webbing belt.
10. Dinosaur friend
It's not completely necessary, but having a tiny dinosaur friend can certainly tie in with the Terra Nova setting. See the tutorial for more details.
And here are some extra shots...
