Winter Holiday Geek Cocktails
Blood of the Hogfather
A good cocktail to sip on Christmas Eve, or Hogswatch, or whatever winter holiday comes to mind. The base of this drink is the juniper, head-clearing flavor of gin. In it swirls the holiday sweetness of lingonberry concentrate, the spice of ginger liqueur, and the underlying herbal depth of Amaro. A little bit of lemon juice counters the sweetness without changing much else.
1.5oz gin
1oz lingonberry or cranberry concentrate
0.5oz ginger liqueur
0.25oz Amaro or other mild herbal liqueur
2 dashes of lemon juice
In a cocktail shaker, add ice, gin, lingonberry concentrate, ginger liqueur, and Amaro. Shake for about ten seconds and pour into an old-fashioned glass. Add two dashes of lemon juice, stir twice, and give praise to the Hogfather!
Jack Frost
Chilly, mischievous and good-natured, this concoction will have you dreaming of cool winter nights. Starbat created this by toying with the Draught of Living Death recipe. It's basically an ice cream float for adults, and it's not so sweet that your teeth will ache with regret. It's sharp, it's sweet, it's creamy, and weirdly enough it's remarkably refreshing. It's a crisp night with a warm jacket and just a spark of magic.
1.5oz vodka
2-3oz soda water
0.75oz peppermint schnapps
0.5oz lavender liqueur
1 scoop of peppermint ice cream
In a large chilled glass, swirl together vodka, peppermint schnapps, and lavender liqueur. Over the top, pour the soda water, and then add a scoop of peppermint ice cream.
Pepperup Potion
It won't cure the common cold, but this drink certainly will warm you from the inside out. Starbat created this on a cool day, but found it was equally delightful served hot or cold. The heated milk and half-and-half soothes the triple threat of spiced rum, ginger and lemon drink, and crushed red pepper flakes. If this cocktail won't wake you up, few things will.
3oz milk
1.5oz spiced rum
1oz half and half
1.5tsp ginger and lemon drink
0.25tsp crushed red pepper flakes
Heat the milk and half and half in a mug. While that is heating, put the crushed red pepper flakes and ginger and lemon drink in a shaker with the spiced rum, and then shake for twenty seconds. Be careful though, the longer the pepper flakes infuse the spicier it will get. Strain the ginger and lemon drink into the mug, being sure to keep the pepper flakes out of the mug. For best results, drink hot.
Christmas on the Beach (The Donovan's Reef)
Starbat was somewhat at a loss to link this drink to a particular holiday geek genre. But suffice it to say, even those of us who never see a White Christmas need a holiday drink. The brandy smooths the edges off of the whiskey, while the pineapple and the maple syrup are both strong enough to stand up against the lingering bite of the whiskey.
1.5oz brandy
1.5oz whiskey
1oz pineapple juice
0.5oz lemon juice
0.25oz maple syrup
To a glass add ice, brandy, whiskey, pineapple juice, and lemon juice. Stir in maple syrup and sip on the beach being glad you're not freezing your tail off.
