Harry Potter Cocktails

Gillywater

Like most drinks mentioned in Harry Potter, many people have developed their own versions of the Gillywater. Starbat made this version, which definitely hits you in the teeth. The cucumber vodka and coconut rum meld two delicate flavors, and the gin adds some herbal edge. Hopefully Professor McGonagall would approve.

0.75oz cucumber vodka
0.75oz coconut rum
1.5oz gin
Thinly sliced cucumbers

Combine cucumber vodka, coconut vodka, and gin in a shaker with ice. Strain out ice and pour over sliced cucumbers in a old-fashioned glass. If you want to get fancy, serve with ice made in a sphere mold.

Draught of Living Death
Although this potion won't send you into a deathless slumber, it is certainly a cool and powerful libation. This drink was invented by Starbat, it's main herbal notes consisting of subtle damiana, calming lavender, and refreshing mint. The smoothness of the gold tequila deepens each of these flavors and gives the drink it's true punch. No wormwood or asphodel here, but a definitely potent potion.

1.5oz gold tequila
0.5oz Arrogante damiana
0.5oz lavender liqueur
3-5 drops mint extract

In an old-fashioned glass, add three ice cubes or whiskey stones. Pour in the gold tequila and the Arrogante damiana liqueur. Damiana liqueur is a strong, herbal-infused tequila. We found the Arrogante brand to be very good, and excellent for this particular drink. Add the lavender liqueur, which you can buy but might be easier to make it yourself. Finally, with a pipet add three to five drops of mint extract and stir widdershins seven times and clockwise once. Sip slowly and let the spell take hold.

Basilisk Venom

A bane to any Horcrux, this venom is actually has less bite than is popularly believed. Loonatic formulated this basilisk venom as a shot, though it could likely also be scaled up to a full size drink with the addition of vodka. This is a relatively innocuous version of the venom, with ginger beer adding effervescence and warmth to counter the bitterness of the absinthe.

1oz ginger beer
0.25oz absinthe
5-10 drops of bitter absinthe

If you have home-brewed or some sort of very bitter absinthe, pour about 5-10 drops into a shot glass and swirl around the walls of the glass. If not, go right ahead and add the ginger beer to the shot glass. It's better to use a ginger beer rather than ginger ale, you get more depth of flavor. Then add the more common green absinthe very slowly over the back of a spoon. This should create a layer of green on top.

Raven's Claw
Flavors that shouldn't go together, but somehow work marvelously. If a Ravenclaw had the keys to the liquor cabinet, their eccentric genius might think to throw these together. The orange, slightly sweet blue curacao pairs with the bitter and minty fernet branca. The drops of orange blossom water give it a final floral note on the nose. Also, it's that classic Ravenclaw blue.
1.5oz gin
1oz blue curacao
0.25oz fernet branca
5 drops of orange blossom water

In a cocktail shaker full of ice, add the gin, curacao, and fernet branca. Shake for about 15 seconds, strain out the ice, and pour into a coupe glass. Add the drops of orange blossom water to the top and serve.
